Whirlpool Side-by-Side Refrigerator

My refrigerator is a Whirlpool side-by-side with ice/water in the door. It is white and I really like its textured finish. I assume it is energy efficient since it had a tag with an excellent rating when I bought it.
It has glass shelves and I like those much better than the plastic shelves in our old refrigerator. The shelves are very sturdy and I don?t hesitate to put heavy items (gallons of milk, etc.) on them. Also I do not worry about possibly melting or scarring the shelves if I want to put something hot on them.
The thing I like best about our refrigerator is the ice/water available in the door. I drink a lot of water so I use that a dozen or more times per day. I hesitated to buy a model with that feature since other people had told me it was messy.
I haven?t had that problem and I?m glad I ignored their warning. One thing I do not like is the width of the shelves in the cooling (not freezing) side. Sometimes it?s hard to put a large item (pizza box, food platter, etc.) there.
The only real problem I?ve had is with changing the water filter. It is very hard to remove the old filter. The plastic (the filter holder) is flimsy and feels like it would break if I forced it too hard.
The first time I changed the filter I actually had to have the service man come to the house to remove the old filter. He had a hard time with it too.
Since then I?ve been able to do it myself but it?s a task I dread. I?ve had this fridge about five years and have needed a service call only one other time. For some reason the water line leading to the ice compartment kept freezing up.
The service man replaced a part and I haven?t had problems with that again. My previous refrigerator was a Frigidaire. I purchased it new with two doors, a freezer on top and cooling compartment below.
During the first year I had serious problems with it twice. The service man said the thermostat was defective. Once he replaced it I did not have further problems.
I do not think a fridge should come with a defective thermostat so I would not buy a Frigidaire again. I would buy a Whirlpool instead.
