Whirlpool Conquest Refrigerator # ED5LVAXWQOO - DO NOT BUY!

by Beverly
(Pflugerville, TX USA)

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy a Whirlpool refrigerator with the ice bucket and dispenser in the door.

We purchased the Whirlpool Conquest in June 2009. The ice bucket was frozen to the door within a few days and the dispenser refused to dispense shortly after that. We have had 5 service calls, numerous parts replaced, including a new freezer door, and the problem is still the same.

More than one of the technicians who has been here have told us that we cannot use the crushed ice feature. That is the only kind of ice I have used since it was first available and find it unacceptable to not be able to use a product which cost $1289 in the way it is advertised. It has a crushed ice button on the door and I expect to be able to get crushed ice.

Whirlpool is finally submitting our complaint to a review board for possible replacement of the refrigerator. I would like to hear from other consumers who have had this same problem.

Time for a lawsuit? NEW
by: Anonymous

This problem is obviously pervasive. My brother-in-law works at WP so I really can't start the lawsuit but I would certainly join it! He actually mentioned to us, over the holidays, that WP knows this is a design flaw. Why won't they do something about this obvious design flaw. Do they still sell this model?

Another frozen Conquest ice bucket!
by: Anonymous

Greetings and as most of you very unsatisfied with my Conquest Whirlpool refrigerator. I bought the Conquest Whirlpool frig Dec. 30th, 2010 and it is Dec. 28th, 2011. My warranty ends in two days. I have just called Whirlpool, I have already had 3 service calls and repairman out each time telling me I need to clean the ice chamber out every once or every three weeks. I don't have time to clean out an ice bucket all the time. If you hit the button for a split second from crushed to cubed or vice-versa it is supposed to unlock the mechanism so the ice bucket can be removed but if you do it for longer than a second it won't work. It works for the service guy but I have difficulty. I am concerned I will damage the ice bucket with anything sharp trying to break away the frozen ice. I also bought a new Whirlpool washer and dryer since the frig. The washer is a little fussy and won't wash a thick mid size floor rug, it is soaking wet and I have to hand wring out the water. I thought whirlpool was the best. I am disappointed in the frig the most. I love crushed ice and that is one of the reasons I bought the frig that, and the one I had was 20 years old but never had this kind of problems with it. It was a Kenmore, no ice maker. According to Whirlpool the repair service has to be right or I have 90 days to call them back again. The last guy wanted to replace the door and use the existing parts but I told him no way. Why use the same parts that aren't working. I am not happy with this frig. No one else I have talked to that has an ice maker ever has to clean theirs, they don't have the Whirlpool Conquest. I want a new frig but not a Conquest! What a nightmare.

SHOULD HAVE LISTENED!
by: Anonymous

Read the consumer reports on this fridge that urged not to buy in door ice maker model. Boy, am I sorry. Can't get ice cause the flap doesn't close and warm air causes ice to melt into lumps that won't come out or allow you to remove ice bucket. Just ordered $80.00 in parts, but after reading your forum, I don't think it will help. I will send them back and but a bag of ice each week while waiting for a recall.

Whirlpoop Refrigerator
by: Anonymous

I too wanted crushed ice and bought this refrigerator. Within 4 months my ice maker continued to freeze. I was told to use a plastic spoon handle to unclog the frozen part. After two months of poking, I demanded a new frig. Instead I received a repairman who ordered a new door because of the flap did not completely close. After three more months the door arrived. Less than two months later, I had the same problem but guess what-my warranty was expired. Apparently they only offer a 30 day warranty on replacement parts.

Beyond P*ssed!
by: PColaGirl

I've read all of your posts and am so mad I could scream! I've had mine for a year and a half now and have had the same problem of the ice bin freezing up and not producing ice through the door for at least a year of it. And I have only used cubed ice, not crushed. It really upsets me because I "splurged" on this item as I'm on a fixed income. I can't afford to get rid of it to buy a new fridge. Whirlpool needs to make this right for all of us!

I work on these refrigerators.
by: Works On Junk

Started in this business working only on Whirlpool. Great appliances then in the nineties. Quality and customer service became an issue when production moved south. First advice before a purchase. Don't read Consumer Reports. Second, Goggle search the information you need. Now for the stuck bucket problem. Crushed ice is only the partial cause. The augar shaft and coupler on ice bucket are a bad design. You can melt the ice and pour hot water all day long and the bucket is still hard to get off. Repace the coupler on the icebucket and shaft. Grease both parts with a grease that won't freeze. Lastly, remove ice container once a week, empty and save ice if you wish. Flush with hot water and dry. This will cut the problem down to once a year. Ps. Check for gaps around freezer cabinet to liner. I have seen 1/4 gaps. Seal with silicone. Thats what happens when trucks sit with refrigerators on the border for days in the heat.

Ice bucket Frozen
by: Anonymous

I came to this site today after searching about the ice bucket being stuck in my relativly new frige. I saw the post about alternating between the crushed and cubed ices and after about 3 cups of cubed ice, The bucket came right out. I think it must be the crushed ice builds up and the cubed will loosen it. Easy fix. Thank you

Ony Problem Since Day 1 - Crushed Ice /NOT
by: Anonymous

Have had the bucket freezing problem since day one. ICE forms over the release mechanism and then the only way to remove the bucket is to put a tray on the floor beneath the door and start pouring hot water through the ice bucket until enough ice is melted around the release mechanism to allow it to function again. If there is enough heat comming into the door to allow the crushed ICE there to melt then freeze there should be a product recall.

whirlpool conquest problems
by: Mike from Ca.

I do not have the same problems as most on here. The ice despenser does not get stuck. Probably because it has not made ice for years. We remodled our kitchen, bought high grade appliances such as Viking range, miele dishwasher, etc. but ordered this when they were first on the market about 2003. we have to keep turning the freezer off and heating it with a hair dryer to defrost the water line for ice cubes. I have been doing this for about 8 years now. Sorry whirlpool, no more for me. I will pay the extra for the upper line Viking or Sub Zero next time.

Listening for an ice cube falling when you close freezer door. If you do just press lever quickly to clear cube that might be blocking ice door open. Also as others have stated switch back and forth between cubed and crushed to help remove ice bin without to much effort. Hope this helps!

Bad Design - needs recall !
by: EZRider

The ice maker in the door sounds like a good idea, but on Whirlpool model gs5vhaxw the ice bin becomes stuck and is very difficult to remove. The metal spline that rotates the dispenser parts becomes frozen in place very quickly (bad design part). I poured hot water down the bin to get it unstuck but then had water all over the kitchen floor - tried to catch it in a plastic pitcher but the water comes out everywhere! I will try putting Vaseline on the metal to metal parts or spray them with PAM to see if that helps. Maybe I will use a hair dryer next time and see if that works. This model has a SERIOUS design flaw and should be recalled! Our last Whirlpool product...

This fridge is the worst thing I ever bought
by: Ralph C

I am 50 years old and have ALWAYS owned ONLY Whirlpool products - washer & dryer, microwave, dishwasher, range, oven, water heater, etc, etc. Some of these are are the second or third Whirlpool appliance of their type I have purchased. My parents believed in owning only Whirlpool appliances and passed the tradition down to my sister and I.... BUT THIS STUPID CONQUEST REFRIDGERATOR JUST DESTROYED 2 GENERATIONS OF LOYALTY!!!!

I will never own another Whirlpool product as long as I live. Furthermore, so bad is this refridgerator that I can't wait to rid myself of even the Whirlpool appliances that still work fine.

The dispenser and in-the-door ice bucket are a joke. At least once a month someone will try to get a cup of ice only to hear a humming noise accompanied by nothing. This sets into motion about an hour of beating, jerking, heating, chizeling, soaking, moving, vaacuming, swabbing, drying, and cursing. On the advice of a repairman I disabled the crushed ice feature months ago in a desperate attempt to prevent the ritual, but this didn't work. It only reduced the frequency of events by about 50%.

NEVER buy a Whirlpool refridgerator with the ice bucket in the door. As a matter of fact, consider punishing Whirlpool for offering this awful product by never buying another Whirlpool THING. PERIOD!

Please know that I am better than Whirlpool. I will never attempt to sell this miserable piece of crap to another human being. I will either disable the ice maker and move it to the work shop, or I will use it for target practine on the firing range.

Whirlpool Gold Conquest
by: Anonymous

I too have the Whirlpool Conquest. Ours is mod# GS5SVAXVAOO. It was purchased in Sept of 2008. The refrigerator has been a problem every since we've gotten. The fridge freezes food on the top shelf and the ice maker is a piece of crap. Jams all the time, ice gets stuck in the trays and stops making ice. The dispenser gets iced up and fills to the point no ice can dispense. The latest problem is now the little door on the ice maker is broke and I have to manually turn off the maker or it will shoot out ice even when it's full. This unit is a piece of JUNK! I will never buy whirlpool again. NOT a good experience.

Too bad for whirlpool that the service and products has gone to crap! We live in a new subdivision and everyone buys their appliances. I tell everyone not to buy Whirlpool!!!

Oh but wait there is more!!!
by: Somers in WY

My ice maker worked overtime, flooded my kitchen. I had to replace my entire floor. That was just the beginning. My refridgerator door sits about a 1/4 inch below the other side so they are not even on the top of the fridge. Tacky! A while back the light in the fridge side went out. I thought it strange the digital numbers were also out. I bought a new light bulb only to find out that it wasnt that at all. It is some computer feature that costs nearly $200. So, now I have no light in the fidge side. Oh but wait... now a month later the freezer side light was out one day and on the next. Now.. the ice maker refuses to make more than one "tray" of ice per day. My ice bucket sits empty. I paid soooo much for this refridgerator and am so disappointed. I wish whirlpool would make this right. I'm wondering when the fridge is going to quit all together.

Except for Florida that says she has had no problems! I have the Whirlpool gold, same setup and loved the crushed ice feature for about a month till like everyone else, it froze into a clump in the dispenser. And the reason you cant get the bucket off to chisel the ice out is because the gear mechanism if froze solid!
Thank God I bought the Gold series as the mechanism as well as the churn inside is all stainless, where as the lesser priced one had plastic paddles!
Regaurdless, with the price of this crap no days and the "true" fact that manufacturers are building them to last a shorter amount of time. Shame on you Whirlpool or get rid of that overpaid engineer that designed this pile of....you know!

by: Fed up in Florida

Bought our Conquest from Sears in April 2010. Have had issues with the ice bucket the whole time. Have been able in the past to get the bucket to come off eventually but this time it's just not budging. I can see the built up layer of ice about 3 inches high inside the bucket by the bottom. Ice is constantly getting stuck in big clumps right at the top of the chute. We have to use a butter knife to break the chunk apart so the ice will come out again. A whole mixing bowl of ice will come flooding out once the blockage is moved. I'm not sure if I'm happy I'm not the only one with this issue or just really dissapointed in Whirlpool for not taking care of an obvious design flaw. We have had a whirlpool washer, dryer and dishwasher for years with no problems so thought we would be safe buying on of their refrigerators. Guess I will know better next time. Brand loyalty is something the brands strive for but when you produce something with a flaw you only hurt your consumer confidence by ignoring it.

My solution
by: Anonymous

I bought my Kenmore in 2009 and am surprised they haven't fixed this problem. While it was still in warranty a repairman replaced the flap that seals the ice chute. It didn't help. I quit using the crushed ice feature and that does make a difference. Mine clogs up about every 6 months and seems to be worse in the summer. Here's my solution. Either manually empty the bucket or just use the ice until the bucket is almost empty. When there is just a small amount of ice left, I empty the rest. I then pour a glass of really warm water down the chute and let it sit for a minute and then put a glass under the dispenser press the button. Then I repeat. This usually frees up the bucket so that I can remove it and take it to the sink to finish cleaning out the clogged ice. Be sure to put a couple of towels down in front of the fridge because even with a glass under the dispenser it still leaks water out on the floor. I will never buy another refrigerator with the bucket in the door again.

PROBLEM SOLVED!
by: Anonymous

Amazing! Had a repairman come out, and he showed me in 15 seconds how to easily lift out the ice bucket. The problem, he said, is not with the ice bucket freezing to the platform. It's that the rotating metal rod inside needs to be moved slightly to allow the bucket to be lifted out. Switch from cube to crush or vice-versa, hit for dispense paddle for a second or less (not enough to kick out an ice cube), this causes the motor to reverse and move the paddle. Bucket lifted out easily. Tried it several times. It works.

Hope this helps you all, as well.

Ice bucket problems
by: FriscoDoc

Same problem as everyone else. Ice bucket freezes to its socket in the door, so I have to work like fury to get it loose and empty the ice periodically. We gave up on using crushed ice, because we've been told it worsens the problem. I agree with the prior comment that room air gets up the dispensing chute past the release flap and melts ice, causing the freezing.
Already had Sears out once, no particular help. They're coming back next week, and I'm going to ask for a whole new freezer door and ice mechanism. If that doesn't work, I'm going to work toward getting them to replace the refrigerator.
We have always bought Sears appliances, but no more!

Ice Maker Freezes Up
by: Upstate NY

I concur 100%. This issue has occured since Day 1 and is a design flaw. The flapper door does not seal 100% and allows warm air up into the ice bin where it melts the ice only to freeze up again. I have photos of the ice chute completely clogged with a block of ice that was created from melted ice and refroze. We spend an hour with hot water and a hair dryer to release the ice bin. Tried to just use the bin as an ice holder but that clogs up with frost and clumps of ice and becomes useless. Is Whirlpool coming up with a replacement????

I have had the same problem with the ice dispenser on this whirlpool conquest. It makes plenty of ice, but the dispenser for both whole and crushed ice failed. After reading all the previous comments, I think I will save my money and just open the freezer door and remove ice by hand when needed.

In addition, I have already had to replace two shelf units on the door that just fell off and cracked. Not happy with this model.

Can't Recommend Whirlpool Anymore
by: Matthew

Same here! Bought our Conquest in summer of 2010 when we bought our home. %@#*&! ice maker gets ice jammed often and we have to shove the handle of a long metal cooking spoon up the dispenser shoot to work the ice free. We've had success by removing the ice bin and pouring warm water down into the ice grinder until the ice melts. If you do this put a big towel on the floor because you'll get water coming out the ice dispenser shoot once everything melts. It's a mess but it works quickly. In-door ice makers are a bad idea. I expected better from Whirlpool!

Whirlpool side by side 2010
by: Anonymous

Same problem here. I purchased this unit based on whirlpool history. We've been mostly satisfied with other appliances by this manufacturer until this one. With days of use the in-door ice bucket was not releasing ice and was frozen to the door. My best guess is some ice always remains in the chamber inside the door and partially melts blocking the next batch of cubes. If you switch to crushed ice this will make it worse! I would hope the whirlpool folks will make good and fix or replace the parts. Signed: disappointed consumer :-/

Me too!
by: Seattle, WA

Bought a new house in 2009, the appliances came with the house and were brand new.

The ice bin & water dispenser leaked when I was away for awhile and warped my beautiful hardwood floor! Will be an expensive and time consuming fix. I am presently unemployed and can't afford to fix the floor right now.

ice maker nightmare
by: Anonymous

We have had the conquest refrigerator for around 5 years. I don't know when the problem started, but ice builds up on our maker then melting and building up on the door eventually creating puddles on our kitchen floor, when freezer door is open. We have been unable to use the ice maker the way it is intended. We have to scoop the ice out of the door storage compartment. Once in a while it won't make ice at all but then it picks back up.

We also have a track that broke in the frig. So our cheese drawer is just sitting onto of the veggie drawer, loosing that storage space inbetween. What happen to appliances lasting 20 years?

Same problem also...
by: Autumn

We have the same problem with the ice bucket. We have a broken vegetable crisper and meat drawer as well. A top hinge pin that is catchy and makes a loud sound when opening and closing the door like it sticks. Today our bottom drawer on the door broke as well. I must also point out the refrigerator itself is tiny as can be. Really hard to organize because it's so damn small. I can find a thing. The temperature controls are hard to set to get the right temperature. So like the original person that say's,"DO NOT BUY." I totally agree... It's a TOTAL LEMON!

Same Problem Here
by: Kathy in Kansas

I could copy and paste your comments!! They describe exactly what I am going through. I just spent 1.5 hours defrosting my ice bin so I don't have to hand dispense ice. I decided to look on the internet to see if I was the only one that is having these problems. We have had 4 service calls and the tech's told us the same thing...don't use the crushed ice.

Our bin has also cracked (happened yesterday) after I put 4 oranges in in.

The ice maker was modified by a tech so the ice wouldn't get stuck before it made it to the bin. The tech removed the saftey door that hides the tray. The plastic piece that helps guide the ice from the tray to the bin has also broken because the ice was getting stuck.

I am infuriated at this unit. If I could load it in my truck and delivery it back to Whirlpool myself I would.
