RV Refrigerator - Reviewing Top RV Refrigerators

What is an RV Refrigerator?

An RV refrigerator is, quite simply, a refrigerator which has been designed to work in an RV.

Considering that the unit, which is going to be installed in an RV, is going to be working under an extreme set of conditions, you will need to make sure that you purchase a model which has the ability to fit within these guidelines.

That will come in the form of an RV refrigerator, which turns into the best model that you can find for your needs.

Traveling around in an RV can be a great experience and a dream for many people. When you are doing this, however, you will need to make sure that you are still living a lifestyle that you are comfortable in.

The refrigerator will allow you to keep all of your food safe and fresh and you will not need to worry about potential illness from food which has spoiled. The refrigerator is designed to keep that contamination away and you will be able to treat yourself to the best type of fresh food available.

What Makes a RV Refrigerator Different?

Under a necessity, refrigerators for RV use will need to run on a different source of power.

Specialty refrigerators which are made for your RV and motor homes will be able to not only run on the electric source that you can hook up to your vehicle when you stop for the night, but it will need to run on stored power while you are traveling. These RV refrigerators have been designed to do exactly that.

They are also typically much smaller than all other forms of a compact refrigerator. Most compact models will still hold up to 4 cubic feet and may stand up to 3 feet tall. This is not a space which most RVs will be able to hold, which means their refrigerators will be built much smaller.

Typically, most of the RV refrigeration units that you will find will hold less than 2.0 cubic feet of space and will have no freezer option.

This is not always the case, however. Refrigerators which are nearly full size can be made to fit into your RV, with a top freezer option as well as a fully stocked bottom unit. These units will be more bulky, but they can also handle a greater supply of food.

For those larger groups which are taking extended vacations, these large refrigerators, with up to 7.0 cubic feet of space, should be the right models to consider for their needs.

What Should You Keep In Mind?

If you are trying to buy an refrigerator for your RV, you will need to keep certain things in mind.

If you do not follow these guidelines, you will never be able to find the model which is going to suit your personal motor home and you will be left without a way to chill your food. You need to understand -

  • How much space the refrigerator is going to give you and if it is enough for what you want to carry.
  • What the dimensions of this particular refrigerator are and whether or not it will fit into your space.
  • The type of power which it is going to need to operate and whether your motor home is suited to handle those forms of power.
  • How often you plan on using the RV refrigerator during your travels, making it an important part of your traveling experience.
The durability of the refrigerator for your RV is going to be an important issue to keep in mind as well.

You want a unit which is going to last for a long time, as you do not want to be purchasing a refrigerator often. It will need to last through multiple defrosts, as you will not be keeping this refrigerator running while you are not on the road traveling. If the model that you choose cannot consistently handle this, you will be left without a refrigerator in your motor home.

Who Makes RV Refrigerators?

You should be able to find cheap RV refrigerators from a number of different manufacturers. These brands will understand exactly what you are looking for in your refrigeration needs and they will be able to suit a refrigerator to fit in nearly any RV.

These makers will range from -

  • Norcold
  • Dometic
  • Waeco
  • Coleman
The exterior of these refrigerators can range as well. Some are given a wood-like paneling, which can help fit the interior of many different RVs.

Others will be pure black or white, fitting the typical appearance of an appliance. Others may come in any range of colors, helping to establish these units as a special tool which can make a camping experience even more fun.

What Should You Not Expect From an RV Refrigerator?

The entire point of an RV refrigerator is to provide you with the ability to keep your food chilled without taking up too much space in your limited environment.

Features are sacrificed for the sake of space and most people understand this. This is why you should not expect to have a great deal of freezer space, if any at all. You should also understand that the interior of the fridge will be rather limited.

If there is any room on the doors for storage, it will be very small and may be suitable only for soda cans and things of that size. Fitting gallon jugs into the refrigerator may be difficult depending on the size and how many other items you are including.

You may not have any drawers and shelving itself may even be limited, if not completely non-existent.

None of the drawbacks of an RV refrigerator should matter, however, for you understand what you are purchasing from the onset. The choice to buy an refrigerator for your motor home is one that you will make so that you can make your traveling easier.

You will naturally not have all of the comforts that you would typically find at home while you are vacationing, making one of these purchases an easier decision.
