GE Refrigerator Bottom Freezer

by Heather
(Ontario, Canada)

The GE Refrigerator Bottom Freezer worked fine for the first 4 years, then the freezer would freeze up stopping the fan from working, repair bill $206.00, this lasted for 2 years and it did it again, this time it cost $248.00 to fix it.

Since that repair we have had to repair it for the same thing again 5 times (my husband watched the repairman and has repaired it the same way) we had to remove the panel above the bottom freezer and thaw out the ice that builds up where the fan blade is. Since January 2009 it has stopped working 6 times. I would never recommend a GE bottom freezer refrigerator to anyone, there seems to be a major defect to the design of it. In looking for a new refrigerator I will not buy GE again.

Some improvements
by: Anonymous

I am far from being an handy man but I felt that would be heading for a new fridge so I decided to see what is going on in there.

I removed the plastic cover inside the fridge and removed my self the big chunk of ice under the fan. Instead of having to wait 24 hours, I had to wait 2 hours (for a chunk of ice I could not reach) and I hope I'm good for another month.

Bottom freezer defrosting unexpectingly
by: Anonymous

I hate this bottom freezer, it constantly defrosts without warning. I cannot purchase icecream because of this problem. I can open the freezer door and find that everything has thawed out. I don't want my food thawing and unthawing constantly. GE should have posted a warning on the front of this appliance denoting problems to expect. I now wish That I had a refrigerator that I had to manually defrost, or my last frost free refrigerator. An old fashioned icebox would be better than this. Hum-Bug

How to do it?
by: Chris

Hi,

I have the same problem and I don't want to pay for have it fixed. We unplug the fridge for about 24 hours and we are good for about a month. We have been doing this for 4 month and with the summer coming up, I am definitely looking for a better solution.

Did you change any part? Was it long to fix it yourself?

Problems!!!
by: L.K.

I too have the identical problem with a GE unit with a bottom freezer. Water accumulates & freezes around the fan. Repair bills have been high and it takes too long to melt the ice.

The plastic vegetable bins have had the rear corners (flange) break off (with an identical pattern of breakage) or as is the case with the with the front, bottom, interior plastic sheathing, cracked in several places. Other plastic components have been broken when removed or replaced before or after ice removal.

No more GE appliances for me!
