Counter Depth Refrigerator - Cabinet Depth Refrigerators

What are Counter Depth Refrigerator?

Counter depth refrigerator can be an interesting addition to your home because it gives you the ability to have a kitchen environment which is fully flush with the rest of your kitchen.

These units are made with a smaller depth than many others, so that they will come out as far as your typical counter top will.

This means that, if you use counter depth refrigerators in your home, you will have a kitchen that has nothing stick out farther than anything else.

Typical these refrigerators will be made by most brand manufacturers, including

  • GE
  • LG
  • Kenmore
  • Whirlpool
  • KitchenAid
  • Samsung
  • and many others!
The idea behind the cabinet depth refrigerator is a popular one and many homeowners feel that they would make a great inclusion in the kitchen.

When everything looks even, it appears as if your kitchen was designed with full integration in mind. You should not be exposed to multiple levels throughout the surface of your kitchen.

When certain things stick out farther than others, the chances of bumping into something and breaking something that you are carrying or even hurting yourself are much higher. When the refrigerator is flush with your counters, however, you are at less of a risk.

How Will Counter Depth Refrigerators Appear?

Depending on the particular model and brand, your counter depth refrigerator may come in a number of different forms.

The type of refrigerator is usually not affected by it being a counter depth refrigerator, the dimensions are usually the only aspect of your model which is going to vary. You should generally expect to find any of these in a counter depth form -

  • French Door models
  • Side by side models
  • Bottom freezer units
  • Top freezer refrigerators
As stated, the only real difference in these models between them being counter depth or regular models will come with the depth of the units themselves. To make them flush against your counters, they will need to be thinner than typical refrigerators will appear. This can usually affect the size of the refrigerators themselves.

Most counter depth refrigerators will stand between 66 to 70 inches tall, including all of the hinges that will need to move so that you can open the doors. The width of these models may vary, going from between 32 to 36 inches or wider.

The depth is where the difference will come in, with around 30 inches from the front to the back of the unit.

Around 30 inch measurement when the doors to the unit are closed depending on the model you decide to go for. This will have them sitting against your counter tops, so that a straight line is formed from one side to the other. When you open the doors, you are typically exposing a wider range into your kitchen.

Simply because you have a counter depth refrigerator, it does not mean that you can forget about planning to have doors that will fully open. You will need to have the room to both open the doors and maneuver around them with items in your hands.

The models themselves, being varying in style, can naturally come in many different colors. While stainless steel models may typically be the most popular type that you will find in the average home, you will have an array of options presented to you be the different manufacturers.

Each line will have its own choices of design and style, allowing you to fully customize your refrigerator to fit into your kitchen.

What Are Typical Drawbacks of a Counter Depth?

When you stop to consider the fact that a counter depth is only going to be so because it is made with a more shallow depth than other refrigerators, you will understand that you are losing something in the process. This will come in the form of the cubic feet which the interior of the appliance will be able to hold. Obviously, the more cubic feet that a space is rated at, the more you will be able to hold.

It is generally recommended to have 10 cubic feet of space available for each pair of people living within the household. Most counter depth refrigerators will hold around 20-25 cubic feet of space inside, so these models are good for families of 4 or 5.

The more people that you have, the more naturally cramped the narrow counter depth refrigerator will be. Naturally, however, the more people you have in the household, the more food will be taken from the refrigerator.

Certain elements may need to be compromised in a counter depth as well. The door bins may not have the space to hold gallon jugs anymore. The shelves may not be removable or adjustable, preventing you from making your fridge fully your design. The room may not be present for an external water or ice dispenser, which could affect how thoroughly you use your fridge throughout the day. Of course, all of these features may simply be cosmetic in appearance. You may not need these features and a counter depth would be right for you.

Any type of refrigerator that you purchase is going to require a great deal of attention and consideration before you complete the transaction. Your particular needs will be carefully considered in the decision.

The space that you are getting with your refrigerator will need to be weighted against the dimensions of the refrigerator itself. This may also largely depend on the model that you go for, whether it is a French Door, side by side, or top freezer unit. Each of these models will have different benefits and drawbacks.

The wide array of counter depth refrigerators should have you convinced that you will be able to get a great use out of whatever model that you choose.

The cabinet depth refrigerators can still provide function and even though they may be a cubic foot or two smaller, this may be a sacrifice that you can easily live with. Only though careful planning and examination, however, will you be able to determine if this is the case.
